AAA video game companies (in other words, mid-sized or major game publishers) are typically much larger than their indie counterparts. Oftentimes, these teams consist of hundreds of people, many of whom take the reins on a very specialized area of game development. However, certifications alongside a portfolio can help prove your skills and knowledge to potential employers. Even if you know you want to pursue game design, there are many factors to consider to help determine if a college is a good fit for you including size, location, selectivity, and cost. Look at the school's website and game design programs and use guidebooks, college finders, and other ranking lists to help you in the college selection process. If possible, consult with teachers, counselors, parents, current students, and alumni.
What's it like to work for a large video game company vs. a smaller, independent video game company?
Course examples for the program include 3D Modeling and Motion, Game Design, Tangible Media, Word + Image, and Video. Programs are highly interdisciplinary and emphasize on-campus team and independent projects, lab work, research, and off-campus internships with MIT partner companies. Programs explore human-computer interaction (HCI) and graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), software engineering, programming languages, machine learning, algorithms and theory, and computer systems. All programs at the NYU Game Center consist of immersive academic seminars and hands-on experiences in the Center’s development studios and play labs.
In this course, students learn software literacy and gain valuable coding experience. Computational and systems thinking, quantitative reasoning, creative problem solving, and generative visual aesthetics will also be explored in this class. This course provides an overview of the games industry as a whole and the foundational development processes that are used to make games. Students explore the different roles and their responsibilities as well as how project managers lead teams of developers.

The game programs are part of an institute-wide initiative designed to advance the game community through interdisciplinary research, funding opportunities, tech transfer and expansion of industry collaborations. Students in the program have access to The Center for Games and Playable Media (CGPM) at UCSC. Established in 2010, CGPM houses the schools five games-related research labs including the Expressive Intelligence Studio — one of the largest technical game research groups in the world. CGPM partners include EA, eBay, Google, Microsoft Studios, Sony, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the MacArthur Foundation, and many others.

Created in 1998, this interdisciplinary program combines coursework from UPenn School of Design and the CIS Department. Leading to a Bachelor’s in Engineering and Science (BSE) with a Digital Media Design Major (DMD), the program explores animation, interactive technologies, games, computer graphics, and virtual reality design. The MSE CGGT program prepares students for a variety of positions in game design and animation. Graduates of the University of Pennsylvania MSE in CGGT Program have established careers at major studios such as Disney, Electronic Arts (EA), and DreamWorks Animation. The GDD BFA consists of collaborative studios and hands-on experience gained at UW-Stout labs, studios, and other facilities.
