Your Complete Guide To A Victorian Style House

victorian style house

George Gilbert Scott was born on the 13th of July in 1811 in Gawcott, Buckinghamshire. Starting his career as a prolific designer of workhouses, he is most remembered today for his work as a Victorian Gothic Revival architect. His main body of work consisted of the designing, constructing, and renovating of cathedrals and churches, with over 800 various buildings having been built or renovated by him. During the 19th century, many architects from the UK emigrated to one of the British colonies to start their careers in places such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States.

The Most Durable and Easiest to Clean Flooring Types

And, if you're not sure you want to totally revamp your flooring or install an ornate fireplace, for example, one of the easiest ways to mix up your décor is through the accessories and furniture you select. Add in a few pieces with a Victorian influence, such as a few armchairs or console tables, statues, lamps, and more, as Quality Bath suggests. The Victorian Society is a membership charity which campaigns for Victorian architecture. If a Victorian house is the right style of home that you’re looking for, Redfin can help you find one in your city. Maybe you’re not a fan of the low ceilings, but the natural lighting throughout the house makes up for it.

A Brief History of Victorian Architecture

Construction on the mansion started in 1884 and finished two years later in 1886. Despite originally being built for the royal family, certain sections of the property were converted into a private museum after she had passed away and were used exclusively by members of the royal family. In the present day, the museum has been made available for public viewing and is no longer limited to access by the royal family. It is one of the most easily recognizable structures around the globe and is famous for its unique Gothic Victorian architecture.

While these tall ceilings showcase wealth and simultaneously function very practically, they also remain one of the defining features of Victorian homes, contributing to their timeless appeal. Hale House is a Queen Anne style Victorian mansion built in 1887 in the Highland Park section of northeast Los Angeles, California. It has been described as "the most photographed house in the entire city", and "the most elaborately decorated".[2] In 1966, it was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument, and in 1972 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

During that period, a distinct form of residential architecture was developed and became popular. Here are a few of the most popular house styles—known collectively as Victorian architecture. The Victorian era spanned Queen Victoria’s reign over the British Empire from 1837 to 1901.

What are the different types of Victorian houses?

Notable examples include Hamilton’s Dundurn Castle in Canada, modeled after an Italian villa, and the Carson Mansion in Eureka, California, featuring a dramatic mix of Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne details. The lavishly embellished Hotel del Coronado near San Diego is another well-preserved Victorian resort structure. The Victorian passion for ornamentation translated easily to India under British colonial rule. The Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata prominently displays the era’s Indo-Saracenic Revival style.

Why are Victorian style homes so popular?

Victorian architecture encompasses various revival architectural styles popular during the Victorian era, including Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and others. Common features include steeply pitched roofs, towers, turrets, bay windows, stained glass, ornate woodwork and trim, bright exterior paint colors, and wrap-around porches. New mass-production techniques and materials, such as plate glass, also enabled more elaborate building designs.

On the outside, the 1885, stick-style architecture makes this summertime playhouse look like it’s made of candy. The wraparound porch affords splendid views of what was once Lucky’s beloved Santa Anita Ranch. It was the center of many parties and romantic rendezvous during its prime, and is now open to the public through guided tours. Built circa 1888, this charming middle-class Glendale house is a combination of the popular Queen Anne and Eastlake styles of architecture. Four doctors lived in the home over the years, as did the early movie star Nell Shipman. The house is now located in Brand Park and has been beautifully restored by the Glendale Historical Society.

One of the primary reasons behind Victorian home layouts had to do with the way Victorians preferred to use their spaces. As Phillip Ash of Pro Paint Corner told MyDomaine, "open-concept would have been an appalling suggestion" to many Victorians. The Victorians made a clear distinction between public and private areas, and thus the floor plans were designed in a way that would accommodate that desire. While we'll go further into detail on some of the key features, here's a quick overview of some features to look out for.

Its influences were diverse but the Scottish architects who practiced it were inspired by unique ways to blend architecture, purpose, and everyday life in a meaningful way. One of the reasons behind these multi-story structures is simple — a prioritization of social gatherings meant that Victorian homeowners wanted impressive homes to welcome guests in, hence the soaring exteriors (via Houzz). As MyDomaine explains, Victorian homes tended to have fairly high ceilings, which is one of the reasons so many Victorian architecture enthusiasts adore these structures. However, this prioritization of verticality meant that the soaring ceilings were typically accompanied by long, narrow rooms. This is definitely a stark contrast to many modern homes, which feature modest ceiling heights paired with sprawling rooms that stretch horizontally across the property, taking up a much larger footprint than their Victorian counterparts.

Victorian houses stand as enduring testaments to a bygone era, capturing the essence of a time when architectural innovation and aesthetic extravagance merged seamlessly. The grandeur and opulence of Victorian houses are not only architectural marvels but also windows into the social and cultural values of their time, where homeowners showcased their status and refined tastes through their residences. Today, Victorian houses continue to captivate admirers, offering a glimpse into the past and a timeless reminder of the enduring allure of historic architecture. Impressively high ceilings can serve as a distinctive feature in Victorian houses, serving as aesthetic and practical design choices. One of the main reasons for the tall ceilings is to serve the grand effect these homes are made to project.

Small wooden cottages with Gothic Revival features are called Carpenter Gothic and are very popular even today. Even if you never live in a Victorian home, that doesn't mean you can't incorporate some of the architectural details of the period. Sure, you may not be adding gingerbread trim to every inch of your home's façade, but you can certainly consider a few embellishments to give your space that Victorian flair.

New methods of construction were developed in this era of prosperity, but ironically the architectural styles, as developed by such architects as Augustus Pugin, were typically retrospective. Digital tools like BIM facilitate detailed modeling of complex Victorian architecture. For example, BIM software allows intricate modeling of the complex geometries found in Victorian buildings.

During this period many new styles emerged, but all of them are also defined by the era in which they occurred. During this period, the various architectural styles were named after the ruling monarch of the time, Queen Victoria. This famous Victorian building was constructed between 1867 and 1871 and is regarded as the best venue for London’s entertainment events. Situated in Kensington Gore in the United Kingdom, it was designed by Major Henry Y. D. Scott and Captain Francis Fowke. It is another of the Victorian-era buildings that features architectural elements of the Italianate style. The dominant architectural style that preceded the Victorian era was split up into the Georgian period which lasted from 1714 to 1830, and the late Georgian period which lasted from 1830 to 1837.

As with any historic home, you may encounter issues such as outdated electrical wiring, more frequent repairs, and even asbestos or lead paint found in the home. This can increase the cost of updates you may need to make, depending on the state of the home you purchase. While Victorian homes tend to be larger, the bedrooms and closets tend to be smaller, which may be an issue for those looking for storage space. Italianate style Victorian homes mirror the Italian villas they are modeled after. Typically only two stories, these homes also feature single-story porches, wide eaves, low roofs, and the characteristic ornamental brackets. For more about this distinctive style, here’s everything you need to know about Victorian houses.

When Was the Victorian Era?

Early this year the Los Angeles County Museum of Art announced a partnership with the planned Las Vegas Museum of Art. LACMA’s Michael Govan and LVMA director Heather Harmon discuss the details of the arrangement. The owners of Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home argued against landmark status, but L.A.’s Cultural Heritage Commission unanimously voted to recommend the property as a historic cultural monument. While original details are desirable, trying too hard to maintain them can amount to a foolish consistency. The kitchen of this 1900 Victorian in Portland, OR, had five doors taking up potential storage and workspace and a brick fireplace with a badly damaged chimney. To make matters worse, a 1990s renovation added an oddly angled island and a peninsula that blocked traffic.

Hollander Historic Restoration Window Glass

For those who had access to larger incomes, this meant the detached or semi-detached Victorian-era buildings that included all the conveniences that were considered modern for the time such as plumbing, gas, and both hot and cold water. During the 18th century, a few English architects emigrated to the colonies, but as the British Empire became firmly established during the 19th century, many architects emigrated at the start of their careers. Some chose the United States, and others went to Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Normally, they applied architectural styles that were fashionable when they left England. Several prominent architects produced English-derived designs around the world, including William Butterfield (St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide) and Jacob Wrey Mould (Chief Architect of Public Works in New York City). The ornate spindles and knobs found on so many Victorian-era houses, especially Queen Anne homes, were inspired by the decorative furniture of English designer Charles Eastlake (1836–1906).

"[Both Queen Anne and Italianate] have the ornate dressings, such as wall textures and grandeur trim, that make them feel like gingerbread houses," Mize says. While this style originated in the early 1800s, it became common in the United States during the second half of the century. Mize adds that Italianate versions more closely resemble villas from their namesake country. They have more of a rectangular structure, and they feature narrower windows and columns that are "all ornately adorned with trim, complementing the design scheme throughout." Inside, the layout was historically designed to suit the lifestyle of the times for middle or upper-class Victorian families.

Gothic Revival Style

The interior decor of the Great Hall features cherubs, marble columns, and 18th century style furniture – all part of Doheny’s Belle Epoque, a Gilded Age mansion for the likes of William Randolph Hearst and Cecil B. DeMille to visit. While not a house museum per se, you can take a tour – or, better yet, attend a concert hosted by the Da Camera Society under the incredible Tiffany stained glass in the Pompeian Room. In the early years of the 19th century, Gothic Victorian houses began to be built in the Gothic revival style. Victorian-era buildings were designed in reaction to the very symmetric style of Palladianism. By the 1850s, architects were able to start incorporating wrought iron frames and cast iron in their buildings due to advances in new technology.

Bungalows are often one or one-and-a-half story homes with a low-rise structure and dormer windows. They usually feature verandas or porches for outdoor relaxation, an open floor plan maximizing space, and are typically built on larger lots for privacy and outdoor activities. Understanding these architectural distinctions can help homeowners make informed decisions when choosing between ranch houses and bungalows.

Modern turrets often feature wooden construction, adding warmth and charm to the overall design. The use of conical, dome-like, or mansard roofs in modern turret architecture allows for a diverse range of styles to be incorporated into the design. Los Angeles is full of little bedroom communities that used to be cities – places that got gobbled up by a better-known neighboring municipality, and are now just a footnote on a historic plaque. With Drake Park (then Knoll Park) at its heart, it was the first historic district of Long Beach. What's left of it is just one square mile in size, perched on a bluff over the L.A.

Design + Decorate

The Industrial Revolution was underway and this resulted in an explosion in mass production. Victorian-style houses were built for people across a large range of income levels and classes of society. For the factory workers, this meant the gardenless terraced Victorian houses that were built in closely packed rows along small and narrow streets.

Victorian homes are more formal, so there may be many “parlors” or living rooms, and typically feature a formal dining room. There may also be hidden nooks, balconies, and high ceilings, adding to the grandeur of a Victorian era home. Queen Anne and Italianate homes surged in popularity in the United States in the mid-to late-19th century, spurred on by the 1876 Centennial International Exposition (the first official World’s Fair). The advancement of building techniques, the increased accessibility of diverse materials and ideas via new railroad systems, and more widespread house pattern books also further popularized these home styles as well. Strictly speaking, a Victorian house is a home built during the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria ruled, between 1837 and 1901. But, while Brits tend to refer to those dates rigidly to determine what is and is not a Victorian house, Americans are a bit more fluid.

Scott’s productivity matched the expansion of the British Empire under Victoria. By the time of his death, Scott had designed or restored over 500 buildings that came to define the extravagance and confidence of high Victorian design. Stick-Eastlake homes, also just called Stick, share a resemblance to Tudor-style homes with their diagonal, horizontal, or vertical planks (called “stick work”) adorning the home’s exterior. Typically made with wood, Stick-Eastlake Victorian homes are also characterized by their pitched gable roofs, trusses, towers, and embellished trim. Unlike other Victorian style homes, Stick-Eastlake style may not have bay windows and as much intricate decoration. These architectural features are rooted in the design principles and historical backgrounds of each style, showcasing unique appearances and layouts.

The façade of many Victorian era properties often includes an abundance of windows, in all shapes and sizes, highlighting the various architectural features of the home's exterior and allowing natural light to permeate the interior. This newfound love of windows is in part due to the abolishment of the window tax, which took place in the Victorian era, according to Windows & More. Simply put, the elimination of a type of property tax in which the tax cost was determined by the number of windows found on a structure meant that it was possible to incorporate more windows without having to worry about a costly tax bill. If you prefer your Victorian homes with a bit more restraint in terms of ornamentation and decorative details, Italianate style properties just might be your dream spaces. According to Old House Online, this style reigned supreme in the early Victorian period, from roughly 1840 until after the Civil War, making this a popular choice before the Queen Anne craze took over.

Its most recognizable element is the mansard roof, a four-sided, gambrel-style hip roof that is named for the 17th-century French architect François Mansart, who popularized it. This type of roof allows for an extra level inside the home, like a functional attic. The architecture itself, with its gables and turrets, is a photographer’s dream—each angle offers a new perspective on this architectural marvel. Additionally, ranch houses usually emphasize large windows and spacious patios, whereas bungalows are known for their charming front porches or verandas. In contrast, two-story homes boast a smaller roof size, offering a modern aesthetic and potentially lower heating and cooling costs.

As a classic feature that continues to define the charm of Victorian-style homes, the turret remains a timeless symbol of the architectural beauty and craftsmanship of the past. Various substyles like Gothic Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne showcased different characteristics, making each Victorian home unique. The era's architecture remains a timeless symbol of sophistication and elegance. Turrets are a defining characteristic of this architectural style, symbolizing the Queen Anne Revival movement.

This Galveston beachfront home is the perfect vacation rental for the beach enthusiast! It showcases amazing beach views from both the deck and inside this approximately 2000 sq ft home. The large covered deck includes built in benches and comfortable chairs to watch and listen to the waves roll onto shore.

We had a nice relaxing 3-day weekend at this beautiful, clean and light filled house on the beach. We enjoyed walks on the beach and the roar of the gulf while we sat on the huge deck and enjoyed cocktails. The only problem we had was that two of the bedrooms were much colder than the rest of the house but we found nice thick blankets in the closet so we were fine.

There are lots of reasons to book direct as an alternative to VRBO or other listing sites. A local management company will be there for you every step of the way and you may avoid hidden fees. Cool fall & winter evenings make our beach houses with private hot tubs the perfect choice for your off-season beach getaway.

Some include beachfront views, so you can unwind to the sights and sounds of the Gulf. Others include a private pool, perfect for kids who love spending hours splashing in the water.

The beds and pillows were all very clean and comfortable. The kitchen has pots, pans, cups and utensils, but no oil/salt/pepper/foil. Not an issue but FYI if you plan to cook. We spent all of our time on the deck, but the house has a wonderful layout that leaves all guests with a feeling of privacy and seclusion.

Mold Testing: How to Test for Mold in the House

how to test for mold in house

In this case, the sooner you call specialized professionals to fix the problem, the better. If you’re not comfortable handling the job yourself, it’s best to hire a professional mold remediation company to ensure the job is done properly. Additionally, it’s crucial to prevent future mold growth, such as maintaining proper ventilation and keeping your home dry and moisture-free. It’s best to hire a professional mold inspector for accurate results. They have the experience and equipment such as digital moisture meters, hygrometers, infrared cameras, and borescopes, to detect and identify mold growth, and DIY kits may be unreliable.

How do molds get in the indoor environment and how do they grow?

In cases where a moisture or mould problem is suspected, a walk-through should be done of all rooms, as well as attics, basements, crawl spaces and storage spaces. Look for signs of mould as well as for indications of excessive moisture, such as stains or discolouration on floors, walls, window panes, ceiling tiles, fabrics and carpets. Additional signs of excessive moisture may include peeling paint, wrinkled wallpaper, cracks in plaster, warped wood, or efflorescence (white powdery salt crystals on the surface of walls or masonry). Check for obvious signs of leaks, condensation, or flooding, and for musty/earthy odours. It can grow behind walls or above ceiling tiles, so it is important to check for the presence of mould anywhere that is damp, and especially where water damage is known to have occurred. You can scrub mold off hard surfaces with a brush and cleaner, but for more porous surfaces, like drywall, you’ll need to take precautions to not damage the material itself.

Use Soap and Water to Remove Mold

An experienced inspector can identify favorable conditions for mold growth and recommend preventing it. Proper sampling techniques and clear communication with the client are essential for success. Follow industry best practices and the IICRC-S520 Mold Standard to guarantee the best results. Fortunately, testing for mold in your home is a relatively easy task that can give you faster results and save you money. If you’ve done everything you can to prevent mold but still have reason to think the air you breathe is compromised with mold spores, check strategic locations for visible signs of mold. Removing mold on the walls is important, but homeowners also need to know how to detect mold in walls to ensure that the issue is fully remedied.

How Do I Know When the Remediation or Cleanup is Finished?

If these signs are observed, mold could potentially be proliferating in other parts of the HVAC system, such as in the drip pans, coils, or within the ducts themselves. Consequently, it’s essential not only to replace the contaminated filter but to also have a comprehensive inspection and cleaning of the entire HVAC system. Mold spores that are naturally present in the environment can spring to life when they encounter damp conditions in a home. The excess moisture provides mold spores with the water they need to germinate and flourish. When a house feels humid or displays visible condensation on windows, walls, or other surfaces, it’s a signal that conditions are ripe for mold infestation. Please note that some mold growth is normal and not cause for concern.

Are there any circumstances where people should vacate a home or other building because of mold?

Bulk sampling involves collecting samples of materials, such as drywall or insulation, and analyzing them for the presence of mold. Bulk sampling can identify the mold type present and the mold growth extent. However, it can be invasive and may damage the material being sampled. If your home has experienced water damage, such as a flood or a leak, it’s important to have it tested for mold. Moisture is a leading cause of mold growth, and water damage creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

This can identify the specific type of mold present and determine its growth rate. However, it can take several days to get the results, and the process can be expensive. If you’ve had mold remediation done in your home, it’s important to have it tested to ensure that all the mold has been properly removed. Even if you can no longer see or smell mold, hidden mold growth may cause health problems and structural damage.

You can tell quickly if you have black mold by identifying circular black spots. (These spots can also present as dark green or dark brown.) If these spots look furry, you’re sure to have black mold. While they do not detect mold, they will detect wet spots inside the wall you may not see. There is no better detector of mold in a house than your own nose. Whether you can smell it yourself, or you or another house member begins to sneeze when they walk into a room, there may be a mold issue growing out of sight in a wall. Have no fear we’ll go over all the things you need to know about mold and your health, where to look for mold, how to help prevent mold, and of course, how to test for mold.

Symptoms of mold exposure

If you do decide to pay for environmental sampling for molds, before the work starts, you should ask the consultants who will do the work to establish criteria for interpreting the test results. They should tell you in advance what they will do or what recommendations they will make based on the sampling results. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup (8 ounces) of bleach in 1 gallon of water to kill mold on surfaces.

Viable sampling cultures the sample to identify both live and dead spores but may miss heavy or sticky dead spores like Stachybotrys. In addition, non-viable sampling has a faster turnaround time, while viable sampling typically takes 7-10 days. A professional can help you understand the differences between these methods and choose the appropriate one for your situation. If you or anyone in your household is experiencing persistent health problems that may be related to mold exposure, it’s worth considering mold testing.

People with immune suppression or underlying lung disease are more susceptible to fungal infections. Individuals with chronic respiratory disease (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, asthma) may experience difficulty breathing. Individuals with immune suppression are at increased risk for infection from molds. If you or your family members have these conditions, a qualified medical clinician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment. The structural integrity of wood can also be compromised if mold has been left untreated for an extended period. Mold is a type of fungus that can grow almost anywhere in your home.

It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust. Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors. If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem. If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, then, most likely, the mold problem will come back. If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, most likely, the mold problem will come back.

However, lasting relief and a reduction in allergy symptoms are possible with immunotherapy even after treatment ends. Immunotherapy works by gradually exposing your body to an allergen to reduce the severity of an allergic reaction over time. The allergen can be administered through injection (allergy shots) or a sublingual (under the tongue) tablet.

The mold risk indicator alerts you if conditions put your home at risk for mold growth. Even when you’re away from home, this system can provide you with the insight you need to be on guard against rising levels of humidity and warm air. "When moisture levels become too high, it creates a ripe environment for mold infestation," says Elías Rodríguez, M.P.A. Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the EPA, Region 2. "The key to mold control is moisture control. Moisture can be controlled indoors by reducing humidity, increasing ventilation, and fixing any water leaks or other sources of moisture."

The pencils on each table where guests fill out their own orders and turn in their cards to their server was a practice first developed by Mary McKinsey. If an order was incorrect, it would not be the server’s fault. The restaurant debuted in post-WWII 1945 Atlanta as Mrs. Fuller’s Tea Room.

Even though I already ate lunch a few hours earlier, I devoured my meal, making all different kinds of sandwiches on the rolls and cornbread, just to experience all the taste combinations that I could. I asked Jackie if it was somebody’s first time coming to Mary Mac’s Tea Room what she would recommend they order.

This Restaurant Starts Your Meal with 23 Different Salads

Today, Mary Mac's is the only original tea room that remains. Mary Mac’s Tea Room opened in 1945 and remains the quintessential eatery for Southern comfort food. It’s known across the country for its Southern staples such as fried chicken, collard greens, pot roast and fried green tomatoes. If the topic is Atlanta’s best fried chicken, Mary Mac’s is one of the city’s top contenders. The new owners say they aren’t making any big changes to the menu and will continue the tradition of offering first-time diners to Mary Mac’s a complimentary cup of potlikker and a cornbread muffin. Mary Mac’s traditions are the fabric upon which Atlanta was built; a place where all are welcomed with open arms and where each guest feels at home each time they return.

Started in 1945 by Mary MacKenzie, Mary Mac's Tea Room was one of 16 tearooms in the city and served 75 guests. In its nearly 80-year history, Mary Mac's Tea Room has hosted politicians, tourists, and everyday Georgians.

It's because something good is happening. Also, and this is key, come hungry. It's not called "Atlanta's Dining Room," by way of a 2011 resolution filed in the Georgia House of Representatives, for nothing. No, Mary Mac's Tea Room is an institution. It's been a Southern restaurant staple virtually unchanged in atmosphere and ambience since 1945.

There’s no better sweet reward for a long day than a heaping, scoop-filled ice cream cone with whatever toppings warm your heart.
